LA 1

2014

LA 1 is an old two-lane state highway littered with dead water fowl, spray painted roadside signs selling seafood, and parking lots filled with massive  Southern trucks belonging to the 5,000 workers that helipad to the 1,000 big rigs far out in the gulf.  Rigs including the Deepwater Horizon, the site of BP’s 2010 heartbreaking explosion that left the protective marshland surrounding Port Fourchon—where LA 1 ends—decimated.

The BP spill, along with climate change effects and salt water intrusion, has marked LA 1 as unmistakably ground level for sea rise on our continent. These are images from the southernmost 20 miles of the highway.
