MISSISSIPPI CELESTIAL NAVIGATION // Altered tintypes creating a celestial snapshot when our fiercest female civil rights fighters were born

This work encourages viewers to look towards the stars. Humans once depended on celestial navigation for migration, the stars guided them through safe passage towards new ways of living and provided them the tools to explore new territories.

Each of these tintypes—originally exposed in central Mississippi and celebrating Mississippi natives— have been altered to recreate the night sky when three of our fiercest and most dedicated feminist civil rights leaders were born. A celestial time stamp when an American hero came upon this land, and transformed our collective course of justice and equity.

These are, in essence, heavenly snapshots that mark the base of the arc of a heroic journey to make our country what it has purported to be.
