“Change requires intent and effort. It really is that simple.”
Roxane Gay
STEWARDS is a deeply collaborative project that comprises the words and portraits of 40 female-identified South Louisianans who create and tend to intentional space. Through their words, we learn how they navigate and steward space —physical, emotional, ephemeral, cultural, faithful, spiritual, political, matriarchal—and how that space serves as a seedbed for individual / collective restoration and social change.
The compilation of oral herstories and imagery was released in a 150 editioned book at The Stacks book store on July 25th. Free downloadable PDF available here.
Copies of STEWARDS can be found at ABC No Rio Zine Library, St. Louis Public Library, Auckland Public Library (New Zealand), Austin Public Library, Denver Zine Library, Olympia Zine Library, Albuquerque Zine Library & New Orleans Public Library.
This project was made possible through a residency and generous funding from
A Studio in the Woods.
