THE ROAR // The annual citizen-led invasive species hunt in Hawkes Bay
Not only referring to the mating call of the Red deer, The Roar is also the name for the regional, celebratory display of invasive species hunted and killed over a three day period in the rural region of New Zealand's Hawkes Bay.
The country of New Zealand comprises three islands, each possessing an incredibly fragile ecosystem that is susceptible to environmental detriment from imported invasive species. Given there are no indigenous mammals to control the population of non-natives, rural farmers spearhead citizen-led conservation efforts, preserving their valuable farmland while continuing a multi-generational ritual and tradition of bush hunting.
